So, You’ve Built a Survey App. Now What?
Getting something working is the easy part. Keeping it working — on every job, at volume, unsupervised — is the part nobody warned you about. Sixty minutes with an engineer of twenty-five years.
Anyone can make it work once.
The barrier to building software has dropped through the floor. The discipline that makes software survive contact with real work did not come bundled with the tools.
That gap is where the trouble lives, and it is genuinely hard to see from the outside. A tool that handled the file you showed it is not the same product as one your team runs on every job, on the odd case, with nobody watching. Knowing which of the two you have is a skill, and it is learnable in an hour.
Ben has spent twenty-five years on the other side of that gap. This is what he would want you to know before you bet a workflow on something you built: what to check, what breaks first, what it costs to keep, and when the right answer is to build nothing at all.
The worked examples are our own builds, including the parts that went wrong.
An hour that counts, whoever you answer to.
This is structured CPD by construction: a full hour, a predefined agenda with timings, four learning outcomes published in advance, and live moderated Q&A inside the session.
Nothing in the content is pathway-specific or jurisdiction-specific. The worked examples come from building consultancy because that’s the work we do, but the disciplines are the same whether you’re surveying, managing projects or assets, costing, valuing, engineering or designing, and whether you’re chartered, licensed or neither.
If you are an RICS member, it lands on a topic you’re already obliged to find. Under the CPD rules effective 1 January 2026, “AI, data and technology” is a mandatory topic every member must cover with structured CPD at least once every rolling three years. The content is mapped against the RICS professional standard Responsible use of artificial intelligence in surveying practice — global, 1st edition, effective 9 March 2026.
What makes it structured CPD
- Structured learningA live webinar with a published agenda, not informal reading or a recording you skim.
- A full 60 minutesLong enough to count almost anywhere — RICS, for one, requires a minimum of an hour for its mandatory topics.
- Predefined agendaThe full agenda with timings goes out with the joining details, ahead of the session.
- Published learning outcomesFour, published ahead of the session and supplied verbatim afterwards.
- Live interactionModerated Q&A, inside the hour.
- Proof of activityDate, duration and your attendance, confirmed by email.
What you leave with.
The checklist
One page of questions to put to the thing you’ve built — or the thing you’re about to start. Including the ones designed to talk you out of it.
Your CPD record
The four learning outcomes verbatim, plus the date and duration you need. Paste and move on.
The recording
Recording and transcript afterwards, with a curated further-learning list. An hour only scratches the surface, and we’d rather you didn’t take our word for any of it.
A chartered building consultancy that is also a software company.
There aren’t many. It’s the reason we can teach this with authority. The worked examples are our own, and we know where they went wrong.
Ben Ihle
Ben is a technologist and software engineer with more than 25 years building and shipping products across travel, payments, recruitment, AI and property technology, much of it leading truly agile teams. At Beyond Condition he brings that discipline to property and construction, where he built CamReport and Tenderbox.
He is the person in the room least likely to be caught out by the last two years, which is exactly why his version of that story is worth an hour of your time.
Craig MacDonald
Craig is a Fellow of the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors and one of Australia’s most experienced building consultants, specialising in at-scale built asset data collection and building pathology. He is the author of The Building Detective and Chair of the RICS Member Engagement Group (QLD).
He hosts and moderates the Q&A, having spent the last six months as the non-developer in the room.
